Leila Slimani’s The Perfect Nanny flips many of the tropes of childcare narratives on their heads by exploring the perspectives of both the nanny and the mother, focusing particularly on the imbalance of intimacy between nanny and parent, when the nanny knows or believes she knows everything, but the parent knows little to nothing about the stranger in their home, helping to raise their child. We learn from the first page, the very first line, that the story of Louise and the Masses family ends in tragedy. The book begins at the crime scene and we are given the rest of the novel to piece together the how and the why. Perception is at the heart of the novel’s tragedy, particularly around Louise, the nanny. She is obsessed with gathering knowledge about every member of the Masses family and using that knowledge to imbed herself deeper in their lives to become more indispensable. Slimani paints a refreshingly complex picture of motherhood, detailing Myriam’s mental and emotional struggles following the births of her children, the irony of her similarities to Louise, and the dangers of their differences. I found Louise’s final descent into madness a bit unsatisfying because it felt so rapid and extreme, however, I think Slimani’s goal is to keep Louise unknowable even to the reader. No one is completely innocent or completely guilty in this story except, of course, the children.
