Had a lot of potential but felt that it was a little poorly executed. There was so much they did not remotely dive into that seemed a bit sloppy instead of mysterious. It was still pretty enjoyable with its tension. I will also mention a lot of it is Spanglish, sometimes they had translations but sometimes not. This does not affect my rating of it at all, but I do wish I had known ahead of time because it made it a little harder to read as someone who knows zero Spanish.

The systemic cruelty and exploration of grief in this narrative weigh heavily, but it’s worth the discomfort. I felt just as hopeless for the protagonist as he did for himself, not knowing how to help make his life better as grief-filled decisions just kept making life worse. Not many books hurt my chest but this one sure did from beginning to end. For those that have triggers, check a site or StoryGraph to see the list of everything that’s in this book. For me, the racism of some of the characters made me need to take a break and a deep breath during some scenes to shake it off. I have friends and family that have battled with suicide, so that instance in the book was difficult for me as well. Overall a very gripping, engaging, and bruising story. Be prepared to sit with the feeling “that every mile driven tightens the noose a little more”.
