Solid sci-fi affair with a positive message thats deeply appropriate for the Star Trek connoisseur.

Not an action thriller - more a mystery with light philosophical elements.

Always great to see Pike, Una & Spock in action. Star Trek is in safe hands.

This book was certainly different then what I expected. I figured it would be a story that took place over many different locations and deal with a variety of different issues and problems but it really focused on one main storyline. I know some have said it was slow but it felt like a quick read for me. I haven’t watched season 2 of discovery just know bits and pieces about it but I never felt lost in this book.

Really hard to keep my attention, not written like the characters had their actual depth. Reads like generic tie-in fiction which is fine, but not enjoyable for me. Uma McCormack's novels are preferable to me.
challenging dark slow-paced

English: Not exactly my type of topic. Mostly war and tactics, that could've been shortened a bit. But the characterisation was nice to read and the prequel to Disco S2 adds up nicely.

But now a reread review:

After almost 1 1/2 seasons of SNW this is a worse read than before. Because now that we know how much of a space dad Pike is and how much fun the Enterprise family we later get is, this book is a bland mixture of boredom, darkness and coldness compared to the warm, cozy and empathetic atmosphere of the new crew in SNW.

I'm at 50 percent and struggling to get through this time, because 90% of it is just war and there is no fun in it at all. (Which is to be expected of war. But not to be expected of Pike - who's also extremely self-obsessed and whiny here, in comparison to how well he deals with even more trauma in Disco and SNW.)
adventurous emotional funny hopeful inspiring fast-paced

About a third of the way in, I buckled in for what I assumed would be just a rip-roaring, action-adventure space romp. Which it was. Of course, I was pleasantly surprised when the last third added some classic sci-fi elements to all the space battles such. Again, it's nice to see how closely this novel ties in to the show as it ends right as a scene from the show begins. Lots of fun!
