I decided to purchase this during Amazon’s big book sale that has been going on. I remember reading an excerpt form this book when I was in middle school, but I never had the chance to read the whole story.  The absolute emotional rollercoaster that I rode while reading this book has left me feeling drained. I have never cried while reading a book before reading this one.

This was honestly such a depressing read. Flowers for Algernon really painted how hard others make it for those with mental disabilities to live in this world. How “other-ly” they are made to feel.

Charlie, a warm and kind person, was always happy to be around others and to laugh with them. When he began to understand that they were laughing at his expense instead, I felt his anger with him. Why were they so cruel? And when he became more like them, quote-on-quote intelligent, they still didn’t accept him. What did they want from him? Rarely was he ever treated like an actual human being, rather a joke to poke fun at, an experiment to be observed, or a trophy to be boasted. He could never win, and it broke my heart.

My brother is the one who heavily pushed me to read this novel and I’m so grateful. Would easily recommend to anyone. 5 stars.

Well this is a fascinating book and it covers so many things. I am 99% sure that the book is written in such a way, that the reader is able to understand from a couple of first pages that the book is going to end in dramatic way.
But before the end the reader goes through a roller coaster ride with emotions with Charlie(the main character of the book, one of the main characters). And what a ride it is, full events psychology, child development, coping with emotions and life.
After the ride is over the reader then encounters the inevitable sour-sad ending.
This book most definitely deserves all the Awards it has received, I will be so bold to say this is a must read for everyone.
