I keep reading books by Barnes, trying to chase the magic of the Inheritance Games series. This book shares a lot of the same concepts as those books, with the intricate and complicated family drama and the headstrong protagonist who doesn't quite fit in with the upper crust society she's been foisted into. But I didn't feel the same level of magic. Maybe it's because there was no romance. If I'm being honest, the love triangle was the best part of the Inheritance Games series anyway and there is none of that in this book. Not sure yet if I'll read the sequel. This one was really more of a 3.5 stars for me, but rounding up because Barnes definitely has a gift for creating sticky webs of deceit.

This book is just mid. I don’t find anything special or great about it. I also feel like the Author only knows how to write a select few characters as the personalities are the same as the naturals series. It’s also giving try hard like the bigger words used at random times just feels out of place like the author is trying to prove she’s smart.
