Ok... the art for this book is 5 stars. Let me say that off the bat. But
The plot is bad. Like not regular bad but weird “celebrating a metaphor for colonialism with a strange mishmash rendition of the anime Food Wars and an aborted Rat Race/Westing Game plot that never really develops and also doesn’t go anywhere” bad. Am I misreading this??? It’s. Not good. I felt very uncomfortable with it.

A cute idea that didn't always hit the mark. I do plan on reading more from this author in the future though!

Very mixed on this, it's a fun comic and it has cute illustrations but it ends so abruptly. On top of that there's this weird undercurrent of racism and gentrification going on in the story that seems half baked. Am I supposed to be cheering for the white woman who comes into the city of displaced and shunned people and disrupts their traditions and rules? Very odd, it's a fine read but really, read Space Battle Lunchtime instead it's far better.

I loved the art, the world, how they dealt with anxiety, and the bonus recipes!

This was super cute, if a little light on the plot. I love Monster City and I hope to see more stories set in this world.

Fun and refreshing graphic novel after a couple mediocre graphic reads. Great readalike for fans of Space Battle Lunchtime. Would recommend to Grades 4+!

content warnings: anxiety, self-hatred, slurs (against monsters)
representation: fat main character with anxiety, korean side character, black side character

I only read this because my friend hated it and wanted my thoughts. As per usual, when she hates something, I hate it more.

The art style is cute and the first issue is okay, but that's literally all this comic has going for it. The rest of the graphic novel after issue one were so boring I just skimmed the last two. Every character is boring (like Suzan) or unlikable (like Brianna). The only two characters I genuinely liked were Kevin, because he's a cutie, and Madame Cron, who's the villain.

Let's talk about Madame Cron, because there are some really uncomfortable racist undertones in this graphic novel. For one, she's the only noticeably non-white character, she's portrayed as a snake (literally), and she's made out to be the villain. I say 'made out to be' because she's not really. Brianna is the one who came into Monster City and decided to go against its laws by serving its citizens human food, something which is outlawed, and then saying that the food she's serving is monster food. All Madame Cron is doing is trying to make sure that the laws in her city are upheld, but Brianna has an emotional speech when she's found out so it's all just fine. If you're interested in more detailed reviews on the topics, there's one here and here.

In conclusion, don't read this.

Amazing

It was a brilliant book of strength both internal and of will. It shows the difficulty of starting something, fighting for what you love and for what you want. I love the initial feeling of excitement and discovery followed by self doubt.

I loved the visual representation of anxiety and negative thoughts in this comic (also the story was super hecking cute).
