Un libro importante y bien escrito que refleja y comenta inteligentemente sobre las estructuras de clase en Chile… pero definitivamente no es para alguien que quiere algo liviano.

I’m conflicted on this book. The writing was phenomenal and I will definitely read more from this author. However, the majority of the book was extremely slow paced for me. Granted I’m sure that was intentional. The dynamics of wealth, power, and class were heavily involved in this story, which I found to be very important and I’m glad it was made very apparent. The main character Estela was a live in maid/nanny and tells the story of how the girl (Julia) whom she has conflicting feelings for, dies. As the story goes on, it becomes very clear that Estela is an unreliable narrator. Everything she says is from her perspective leaves the reader guessing and filling in the blanks. This is what made me give the rating 3 stars. I don’t want to make my own conclusion about the ending, especially since I felt it took a long time to get to the end. I was left disappointed and underwhelmed.

This was my book club’s pick for July and honestly it’s probably one of the first works of translated fiction we’ve consumed together  and I’m really excited to see what everyone thinks of this tale.

Our FMC, the housekeeper/Nanny in this story has had a rough go of it, and what’s worse, she’s woken from a haze in an isolated interrogation room, defending herself for a case we know nothing about. Speaking to an assumed group of investigators behind a sheet of tinted glass.

The little girl she Nannies for has passed away and it’s likely suspicions are placed in het direction. But told through a recounting of memories and trauma dumping, readers get an inside scoop into the horrors that sculpted a broken family, who paint their smiles on for the outside world to believe in.
