I wouldn’t personally call this a thriller.
This worked for me. Though the pacing was a bit slow at the start, I found the style kept me interested (audio in particular) and I enjoyed the more ‘mundane’ parts of the book.
The rats, the guy at the petrol station, the piano lessons etc
This had small nods toward approaching a conversation around class divides and though it never really delved into it, I found that there was still a lot to read between the lines.
I also really liked theway Estela’s voice spoke to her mentality throughout the book. Withdrawing her voice from the family she waits on was her only form of control and I thought it was used (and not used!) well throughout.
If you’re expecting this to be a murder mystery type then you’re in the wrong place. But if you like a touch of disdain in your literary fiction, pick this up.

Estela, a maid for a wealthy Chilean family, is locked up in a room explaining the circumstances leading up to a girl being found dead.
This book had a lot of suspense. I kept turning the page because I was so intrigued with the little narrative details, Estela's characterization and of course the ominous death.
I just had so many questions reading this book; Is Estela responsible for girls death? How did the girl die? Who has locked Estela and where is she?
From the opening I felt like I really needed to know what happened and now I've finished I still don't quite know what happened 😆. But honestly, this novel is just so interesting with its tangents and digressions which is weirdly the making of some great story telling. This book is from such an interesting perspective and a voice I've never heard before. I just wish the ending felt a bit more conclusive
