Calling this female American Psycho is a gross oversimplification. Maeve Fly is far more interesting to me than Patrick Bateman. I will say, I wouldn't call this feminist, as some of the critics have said. I don't know. I may have to revisit my opinion on that. I mean, I wouldn't call it UNfeminist. I just think Maeve has a complicated relationship with men, and anyone who has experienced womanhood, I feel like would understand that. Anyway, loved this book! Absolutely devoured its pages over the course of three days. """Unlikeable""" female characters my beloved <3333

I saw a review that said something like…”I’m not your typical weird girl” and laughed. Feels apt.

I loved this one. Maeve rightly joins the ranks of fictional killers that you can’t help but care about, even as their acts test your own endurance for depravity. Looking forward to this author’s future works.

What in the world did I just read. “Weird” actually might be an understatement. I flew through it because I couldn’t stop, even though I had really mixed feelings the whole time. Disgust was a big one.
This book felt like it was trying to go viral by being absolutely bat shit crazy and by fitting a bunch of TikTok trends all at once (Disney adult, hockey romance?, body horror, female rage).
Some of it felt pretty forced and pretentious: the nonstop obscure references, dramatic quotable lines and the just general pick me girl energy. After reading American Rapture, I can tell the author has more range than just this. It made me more understanding knowing that the MC insufferable voice was intentional.
There were also a few plot threads that just… didn’t really get tied up? And not in a mysterious or subtle way, more like she just didn’t finish or think through the logistics. Still, the ending was strong and made sense for the story it wouldn’t have felt right if Maeve got a happily ever after.
