Lovable story with impecable writing, I adored every second of Gina’s story, even when she exasperated me to death.

Once again, Magda Szabó stuns with this beautiful novel. The story follows head-strong Gina Vitay living in a Hungarian boarding school during WWII.
At the school, Gina struggles with her social standing, relationships with teachers, and her understanding of why she needs to be at the boarding school. During her time there, she learns of Abigail, an enigmatic protector that helps all girls who attend the boarding school. Gina turns to Abigail and learns a shocking truth.

Even if we set this interesting plot aside, Szabó has an incredible ability to describe and develop the complex relationships between women. An overarching element of unseen support is sprinkled throughout the book, making this coming-of-age novel an instant classic for me.

I really enjoyed this book. At first, we expect just a coming-of-age story, but as the war elements creep into the story, I found that this was much more. It really confronted what it means to be sheltered during the war and how it affects daily life, even for the most privileged of people. I also liked how
the resistance movement was featured in this book
