"Abigail" è un romanzo molto diverso rispetto a quelli che avevo letto finora di questa autrice: la protagonista è giovane, semplice e ingenua, molto diversa dalle grandi e complesse protagoniste già lette, ma non per questo la storia è meno profonda, anzi! La Szabó fa diventare protagonisti accanto la giovane (Geor)Gina temi che negli altri libri erano solo accennati: l'Ungheria filo-nazista e la resistenza. Certo, i misteri della trama sono un po' prevedibili, come quello che si cela dietro ad Abigail, la statua dei desideri che risolve i problemi di chi lascerà una richiesta nella sua anfora, ma la storia non ne soffre, anzi, si aspetta come il Natale che avvengano certe cose che sai già che avverranno. La scrittura della Szabó poi è sempre incantevole, i suoi personaggi ricchi di sfaccettature, mai comuni macchiette, e... è riuscita a rendere coinvolgente la vita di una giovane ragazza in collegio! Roba che neanche la Brontë in Jane Eyre, che per quanto io ami quel romanzo, i capitoli in collegio sono sempre una prova di resistenza! XD
