I’m convinced Jennifer Hartmann puts crack into her books. This is the second book I’ve read by her and it’s another EASY 5⭐️ from me. This one is gonna stick with me. This was such a unique and beautiful and brilliant take on a childhood friends to lovers story. Oliver is the standard for all book boyfriends. I mean what a GUY. When I first started the book I wasn’t sure how I felt about the story line but after maybe 3 chapters I was hooked. If I could go back and read this for the first time again I would a million times over.
I am obsessed with the pure chemistry between Sydney and Oliver, the way Oliver speaks about Sydney in general, Gabe, the cat, the damn raccoon, the overlap of characters from Still Beating and even the crazy old lady across the street. Oliver reminds me so much of Archer Hale (IYKYK

The voice actors didn’t fit either main character but it was still good! Although nothing will ever touch Still Beating but it’s a close second
Man, I so wanted to like this. Doesn’t even belong in the same discussion as Still Beating.
this book was a wild fucking ride. i was seriously loving it until i just… wasn’t anymore. maybe it got a little too wild for me. what travis did to clem was nauseating and reading about it made me feel physically ill (was honestly surprised there wasn’t a trigger warning). also the meaning behind the word lotus was such a disappointing reveal. i loved oliver and sydney, but that was literally… all i loved about this book. the thriller aspect of it just didn’t hit. the pacing was excellent and i loved the way the characters were written, but idk .. i just felt like some of it made me have to suspend my disbelief. it just seemed a little far-fetched. like why does this boy have a literal raccoon as a pet ?? also lorna showing up to save the day ?? like be for real. what kind of old lady is gonna run into a house that is literally on fire?? idk, it just seemed too convenient. in fact, a lot of this story seemed convenient. i wanted this to wreck me and tear my soul out, but i wasn’t impressed enough to care. ALSO the drawing from oliver’s comic at the end gave me the ick, and the pages were LITERALLY falling out of my book! i don’t know if this review makes ANY sense, but i need to get my thoughts down.
to summarize: i loved sydney and oliver as characters, and i loved their relationship, but i didn’t love the mysteries in the story, and i didn’t love the thriller aspect either. it’s not my favorite genre, so that is likely why, but idk. i was just hoping for more.
