I loved the fact that three quarters of the book takes place at sea, on one ship. It takes a great amount of skill and nuance to make a singular setting like that totally exciting and encapsulating. Even I, a notorious landlubber, began to dream about the sea and its endless possibilities.

However, though the series had a great beginning, and the second book was great, I must say that towards the end I found myself skimming more than reading. Temeraire's relationship with Capt. Laurence comes under strain and subsequently the final few chapters are awkward and trope-y.

I have bought the third book but it will take a little time before the motivation to read it returns.

I was afraid, after enjoying the first book so much, that the focus may shift to more of the battles/military strategy and lose some of the charm of introducing us to a new world...but I couldn't have been more wrong! While there is still that element of war and strategy very much at play here, the overall story retains those elements of learning about a new culture, recognizing assumptions you have made, growing from those realizations and opening of your mind, etc. In this case, Laurence and Temeraire go to China, and realize that the way "society" and dragons interact in Britain is far from the only way it can be done. Injustices are highlighted (with parallels starting to be made regarding the fight for abolition of this era), even as they are in turn impacted by assumptions and stereotypes made by others.
I loved seeing the growth that happens for them individually, and in their bond with each other and their crew, etc, alongside the world building and culture clash elements. And the overall plot of the Napoleonic Wars continues to advance in some unexpected ways--it is clear that we are not going to be rushing through that time in this series. I listened to the audiobook very quickly and was immediately ready to dive into book 3.

Definitely a book about being on the way to someplace else

If you really liked the first book, you’ll likely like the second book.

Temeraire and Lawrence go to China.

I’ll probably read the third book, but not right away.
