I mentioned to a friend that I needed something in the sci-fi genre to fill the void of the dystopian stories I used to read as a young adult, and they recommended Red Rising. It was a GREAT recommendation, and I will read the rest of the trilogy.

I would describe this as Hunger Games meets Game of Thrones, set on Mars.

My ONE complaint would be the pacing - some sections moved very quickly, while others seemed to take a dozen pages to get through a conversation. I'm not docking points because this is the first book in a trilogy with worldbuilding to set up. I might knock off half a star if I read the sequel and have the same issue.

I do not recommend this book if you are sensitive to the types of violence that occur in worlds like Game of Thrones. Sexual violence descriptions are not graphic, but other violence descriptions are.

So, I went into this book blind. I heard so many people raving about it, so I finally bumped it up on my TBR, and I just read the gory**** thing!

Prime!

It is so great. This is an amazing book with a coming-of-age trope. This book is so reflective and at times emotional.

There was so much development, yet there are so very many loose ends I must read tied!

I'm really excited to keep pursuing this series. I hope they hold the momentum! I'm super surprised that it is 7 books. It has so much potential, and I am so excited to see where it carries!

“I would have lived in peace. But my enemies brought me war.”

The first line of Pierce Brown’s Red Rising had me. It had my interest and it kept it…for the most part. While it’s true I thoroughly enjoyed Red Rising and as proven by my rating, I enjoyed it a lot more than most books, there were moments mid-book where I was wondering when it would get exciting again.

But this was only for a chapter and a half. Pierce Brown, you clever, crafty sob, you had me in the first half, made me think this book was going to go one way and completely flipped the script.

Some might say this is Hunger Games in Space and maybe part of that is correct. It certainly has a lot of similar elements that Hunger Games has (with the houses being the districts) but I feel it differs from HG immensely. There is a lot more here. There is a story about love and grief, about revenge, and about hope for one’s people.

I was told that book 1 is the weakest one, but if that’s true then, I’m really excited to see what the next books in the series give me. I am also very very worried about what they will do to me.

Pierce Brown, you sob, how dare you torture me with this book!

Anyway yeah, this was gorydamn brilliant, my goodman!

Reread; god I love this series. It holds up well even multiple years and rereads later. The plot twists and character building is incredible. I’m so happy that this series is getting the fanfare it deserves now.
