The most shocking part of all was finding out that Tanaka is also Arslan no Senki's author. I mean, what else can I say about a series that almost 30 years old? Maybe that it has more literary value as a classic from japanese scifi than as a piece itself.

I thought I was going to be put off by the stilted translation and by the "He would be known as [INSERT CHEESY NICKNAME HERE], but I wasn't. By the end of the book, I was all about the story, the theme, and the characters.

What seemed like a bog standard military science fiction series, turned out to be a condemnation of the entire military/industrial-political complex. I'm very interested to see where this goes next.

The beginning of a remarkable classic space opera, admittedly enhanced by my prior experience with watching the OVA (which is one of my top favorite shows of all time). I can see that this may not appeal to everyone since it can be dry at times due in part to the stilted translation, but I mostly found the writing style that is sometimes akin to a history book to be appropriate for its major themes of societal and political commentary.

The story pits a corrupt democracy against an idealized autocracy in a way that elucidates the strengths and pitfalls of both sides (extremely reminiscent of current global politics). There is struggle, there is frustration with the constraints and corruption within both systems, and there are great, horrible, and morally gray people of every affiliation. The two main sides represented by the vastly contrasting perspectives of Yang Wen Li and Reinhard von Lohengramm are equally compelling, which really is a testament to the author’s knowledge of history, tactics, and Chinese literature like The Three Kingdoms. It’s a tale about humanity in all its ugliness and triumphs and conflict that frustratingly stems from the same issues time and time again, and I, for one, very much look forward to completing this series since this is most definitely just the beginning.

Wow this may be a "light novel" but it's dense, so dense.
