I decided to read this after watching the first episode of the new anime that was made from this really good space opera I really loved this book for such an old book it was so well written I liked all of the characters they were also well written. I really liked the characters they were so well written the ones I liked best were Reinhard, Yang Wen Li they were so very interesting I really enjoyed reading about them. I really liked the story even with its long and drawn out explaining of things it was well written and I look forward to reading volume 2.

Honestly kinda dunno about this. Some of the issues are definitely a product of being from a very different era of SFF writing and there's some stuff I'm inclined to chalk up to translation quirks. Feels very much like it's a book that's recapping stuff from another medium rather than putting you in the action and into someone's head while stuff is going on.
Dunno if I'll read more in the series or not.

Reads like a lighter version of David Weber. It's the same kind of military space opera based on historical tropes, but in a considerably lower word count.
It also features tropes common in military anime since Gundam: younger protagonists and antagonists, morally gray areas between the warring sides, etc.
Overall it was very entertaining, and I plan on following the series as it comes out in translation.

This series very nicely fills a certain space opera niche that almost no others have for me. These aren't light novels. It's a Japanese SF series. How much difference that makes is a matter of debate though. There are 10 books in the series. The anime OVA is better, though it is rather slow to start It's difficult to say whether the TV series is better or not because it was my third time with the material, but I lean towards that the adapted works tend to have slight edge at least. As with any translated work of this nature, it's certainly not be to be read for the prose and there are some rough patches and mistakes because paying a translator, editor, and proofreader to do a suitable job isn't their highest priority.
An interesting read that certainly shows its age at times. However the larger themes still ring very true. I'm curious to see where this series goes as I know nothing of the anime.
