Perhaps unfairly I am comparing this short story collection to what I've read of Bukowski from other writings which previously had only consisted of his Post Office trilogy, good reads that depreciated as the series went on IMO. What held me captivated by the PO trilogy was knowing much of the work was nonfiction with added embellishments; with these short stories I was both disappointed by poor writing and characters as well as by the fact that it was pure fiction. Bah, unfinished and moving on. Will try another Bukowski in the future.
The cautionary tale of the shrinking man and the witch reads like a folk classic, very fine.

All wrapped up in Bukowski's signature cynicism.
It's like reading a fair less glamourised version of Sin City and yet it's honesty is laid bare. A tough read, but one that makes you take a look at yourself and the world around you.

A savage, grimy and lively collection of stories. Bukowski holds the attention but his topics sometimes feel repetitive and lacking in depth.

God, this story just made me uncomfortable. The violence, the sex, the way people are discussed, just aggressively uncomfortable. Never mind the strange and stiff writing style. That business with the pins was almost the worst. It was interesting in the way a car crash is.
