Good historical mystery set in a housebound manor in rural England. This is the sequel to Silent in the Grave and it was good to see the heroine again. Nice interactions with her family as well. The mystery took a while to get going and I have a feeling the author is going to dole out the romance in small pieces (which might need to get a little bigger) but this was good.
Kept my attention but the characters aren’t as crisp as in the Veronica Speedwell series.

My *goodness* that was a mess. I a really well executed, fun to read way.
As a general rule, I don't really read 'romance' novels but if all romance novels were like this one, I would read far more. If you think too much about it you will find flaws, so just don't think. Enjoy it. I did. I love Lady Julia and all the crazy Marches. I think Brisbane is a fantastic 'tall, dark and handsome' interest.
So in need of a light mystery with a dash of romance, then read this fun series. Off to get the next one...

Another quick re-read that I had to force myself through towards the end. There I still things I like about the series but there are other issues (some historical, some pacing and some characterization) that put me off the story. I'll read the 3rd one because I own it but I'll probably stop after that.
Lady Julia is my homegirl. This series is engaging - the murder doesn't actually take place until about 200 pages but the book did not feel any poorer for it, thanks to Lady Julia's wonderfully witty view of her family and acquaintances as they gather for Christmas and a wedding.
I loved the mystery and the ominous note on which the book ends seems to suggest more sinister things await Lady Julia in the future.
HOWEVER, I was annoyed by the ending! In that good "I care about these characters so I am annoyed" way, not the "ARGH, what were you thinking, author?!" way. I had to restrain myself from not diving immediately into book 3. So help me, if I don't get my resolution, I will not be held accountable for my actions.

I'm glad this series has followed the pattern of the others in that I don't want to put it down till it is finished.
The first one wasn't my favorite but I really wanted to like this author. This just didn't work for me.
