I'm not gonna give this a rating until I read I read it physically because I did NOT enjoy the audiobook

Lorde's voice is crisp, emotional, and warm. Reading her essays is like having coffee with a dear friend, who candidly provides cogent analysis of the problems we face as women and which Black women in particular face. Several passages are underlined with a brief annotation "!!!".

It took me so long to read this barely-200-page-long-book for two reasons: first of all, and most importantly, exhaustion from work causing lack of motivation and concentration and second of all, I couldn't read too much of it at once because all of the essays are so interesting and thought provoking in so many different ways. I found that I was not able to read more than one or two essays in one sitting (or just one if it was a big one).  I had to really sit with them for awhile. Anyway this is my first Audre Lorde and I need more!!!

As the intersection between racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of dehumanization gain greater attention, I had to read this books. Lorde's life as a Black lesbian mother really is unique. But as she says, she doesn't want to diminish any of those parts by focusing on them. Instead, at its best ("Scratching the Surface: Some Notes on Barriers to Women and Loving", "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House", and "Man Child: A Black Lesbian Feminist's Response") she unpacks how all of those things tie together. A couple of the pieces were almost too poetic for my taste, but that makes sense seeing as how she is a poet. Still, this is inspired writing and should be read.

I'm really happy this collection was my first time really digging into Audre Lorde's brilliant mind. Her fearless prose helped me focus a bit more purposely on the pressing contemplations I've always had: social interactions between black women with sexism (in particular, heterosexism) and white supremacy as a looming backdrop as well as relationships between black and white women with mainstream feminism as a backdrop.
Great start as I continue my journey in learning and loving my ancestors.
