For decades books I've read and people I've talked to have urged me to read Audre Lorde. For no particular reason I never got around to it...until now! I sure am glad I finally picked up some of her work, and will surely add more of her titles to my bookshelf. The essays in Sister Outsider are eloquently written, easy to understand, and helpful today; decades after they were written.
Immediately an all time fave. So so so so so good.
It’s clear that Audre Lorde is a poet because she doesn’t waste words. Every choice is so precise and deliberate, which made the impact that much stronger. The way she framed the use of rage within activism and Black womanhood….stunning. I also loved the way she unpacked conversations within the Black community surrounding queerness, self-policing, etc that are still happening today. And her dissection of the relationships between Black women…that part hit me right in the chest. She put words to interactions I’ve had multiple times. Every part was excellent but the two essays that made me immediately want a physical copy were “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House” and “The Uses of Anger”. This is a classic for a reason.
I appreciated being able to clearly see how this influenced recent nonfiction gems like Hood Feminism, Eloquent Rage, and White Tears/Brown Scars. While I love reading the work of modern thinkers, it’s always great to visit the foundational stuff.
This should be required reading. Like seriously. One of the best pieces of nonfiction I’ve ever read.

Oh my God, so many people have told me to read this because it perfectly discusses what it's like to be a Black woman in america. They were absolutely right! I found myself underlining each and every sentence.
I will give this another read to take every page apart!

This has taken me months to finish because I’d have so much to chew on after each essay.
