Such a lovely, gripping book.

The story itself is fun and intriguing, but the protagonist Lady Trent is so easy to root for that it makes this book a delightful experience. I loved the way her youthful nativity, enthusiasm and passion as a young woman contrast with the self-awareness and sense of humour of her older self as she narrates the story.

Great springtime read, can’t wait to pick up the sequels.

I love dragons, and had a great time reading this. I'm thinking of getting the next book in the series to read too.

I didn't fall in love with this book; I didn't have the emotional capacity for that after my most recent beauuuuutiful read (She Would Be King by Wayétu Moore). I'm not committed to reading the rest of the books in its series; that's wasn't the point of this read for me. It was more of a rebound read to get me over the emotional slump ending my relationship with She Would Be King put me in.

I enjoyed this story, though. It was a nice, fantastical read about a girl who dreams outside of gender roles and figures out how to work the system of sexism to be seen in all her intelligent and scrappy glory. It also had a bit of a mystery element in it! And dragons!

As far as rebound books go, this was a great one. 5 dragons, for sure: 🐉🐉🐉🐉🐉  But in the overall scale of bookish awesomeness, I'd give it probably 3.5 stars. 🤷🏻‍♀️

⚠ CW: mentions of miscarriage and grief, themes of misogyny/sexism, some classism, and animal cruelty in the name of science.

I loved getting to know Lady Trent and the people around her. Her relationship with her husband was really enjoyable in how it focussed more on their friendship than fluffy romantic feelings (I like fluffy feelings, but it's nice to show a relationship without them every one in a while). I am not aromantic, but I think some aromantic people might relate to Lady Trent. Exploring how it is to be a woman in the sciences was also lovely, as Lady Trent's native country is a lot like the UK in the 1800s.

This book was GREAT! I love it so much even though it made me miserable at the end!. If you like stories about dragons, science and Georgian/Victorian/Edwardian-style fantasy settings then you are in luck my friend! I don't know how else to describe it but it is v v good!

Admittedly the dragons are more on the feral beasts side of the scale but they somewhat mysterious (much in the same way of other apex predators that are only rarely seen) and feel real in their behavior.

Another good thing about this book is the relationship between the main character and her husband. Jacob tries so hard to enable her interests (but is also very much a man of his time) while Isabella is single-handedly causing absolute MAYHEM mostly by accident!

I am very much looking forward to reading the sequels!
