I’ve heard the author discuss these issues in interviews and have found him very compelling, which led me to this book. I learned a lot and the various topics covered were very interesting. That said, I thought the book dragged a bit at times and while there were good examples of where current policies fall short in supporting autistic people and other people with disabilities, I would have love more discussion of how they can be improved and where to go next. Overall, a good read, but left me wanting more.

Garcia's book is such an important exploration of how autistic people exist in a world of policies and systems not designed for us. It feels like it captures the need for a tide change in our collective understanding of autism. The author does a wonderful job of including a broad range of autistic perspectives, creating a very inclusive-feeling snapshot of the community and its place in our current world.

DNF. Just didn’t do it for me at this time. May revisit again at a later date. Just couldn’t get into it.

Focused on public policy and how it affects autistic people rather than the internal experience of autism or external manifestations of it. Some biographical and autobiographical anecdotes woven in. Good integration of disability justice history and perspectives that shows what the autism acceptance movement owes to previous waves of disabled activism, which often isn't well done in autism books! Not a starter book for those just learning what autism actually is, but a good overview of the issues facing the autistic community that focuses on ableism and structural barriers rather than autism itself as a barrier.
