This book is great if you're not very knowledgeable about the concepts of neurodiversity and disability justice, but for someone who has already been making a point to learn about these things it felt a bit flat. I don't need to be convinced that autistic people are fully capable humans, and it felt like that was perhaps the main goal of this particular book. I'd really have loved more about personal experiences from the author or the other people mentioned throughout.

I’d like to give it 5 stars but it’s focus on American autistic experience leaves me as a British European autistic adult excluded or bewildered in places as references and experiences are relevant to those in North America. Ironically I read it for its diverse perspective but consideration for diversity of readers. I hope an international edition would correct this error and broaden its context of an otherwise excellent book.

Well informed & Insightful.  Eric offers very powerful insights from his lived experiences and those of  disability advocates.

I listened to the audiobook. There were some interesting tidbits and facts I didn’t know, but I do with the book was a bit more personal as in more personal experience etc. the ones that were mentioned felt like a drive by mention of experiences. It was a lot of talking at. I do appreciate the information and I think this is a good book if you don’t know much about the current stance around autism. My last point, the audio editing points were so obvious. It was like he would go from one tone of voice to a completely different octave in a few sentences sometimes. They didn’t do a good job at making sure the audio experience was seamless and that took away from it a bit for me.

This book is so eye opening to much of the history of autism and the ways the world treats autistic people. There’s a lot of heart as well as information and it projects a strong message that there’s nothing wrong with autistic people. And that we deserve to be heard and consulted about our own lives and portrayals.

Great book with an important perspective.
