now i’ve actually finished this whole series im way too emotionally invested to give a decent review. i STILL think the pregnancy storyline was unnecessary and could have been cut with some creative editing work (sorry jake!) but in all honestly this made me bawl like a baby. i love when a book gets in deep enough to do that so definitely kudos for the waterworks. the ending has left me feeling satisfied but not TOO satisfied which is crucial for me, i need to be left with something to chew over in my head for a book to really stay with me and i think this final instalment has done that.

definitely would recommend the dark tower series to anyone on the hunt for a weird, eclectic, authurian, western-style odyssey that includes a cute furry companion with the disclaimer that it’s gonna take you a while and may break your heart a little.

(unfortunately, now ive completed king’s keystone narrative, i feel like im duty bound to work my way through the rest of his work on an easter egg hunt. wish me luck with that.)

This book, the whole series honestly, broke me mentally and emotionally. I can’t believe I put it off the way I had.

That was the most disappointing finale to a series I've ever read.

Honestly, it is like Stephen King had no idea where this story was going when he began writing it. He just made shit up as it came to him and it resulted in this disjointed mess. The retarded kid from The Wizard's Glass returned--yay, because everyone always wondered what happened to Sheemi. He has magical teleportation powers and--oh, nvm, he's dead.
And then he kills off Eddie in a super anticlimactic way. Gunshot to the head at the end of an epic battle. That was sad. And then Jake dies soon after. Their deaths were okay, but completely undermined by the fact that Suzanna "finds" copies of them in another world and essentially settles for them.
I'm just going to list all the dumb things tht happened in this book. So I can look back at this review and remember why it deserved 2 stars...
-Suzanna bailed on the final battle for absolutely no reason. She pretty much just ran away.
-Some random artist guy shows up ans solves all of their problems. He even defeats the Crimson King. So honestly, none of the stuff that came before his appearance was really relevant. They just needed some artist to draw the Crimson King and erase him and POOF they win. So dumb, no build-up at all to that solution.
-Sheemi. No one cares about Sheemi, ok?
-Stephen King's massive cameo. I've never been a fan of it.
-OH, and Mordred! He spent the whole book chasing Roland and co and then he dies in a matter of seconds. Absolutely no payoff for all the time we've spent with him. He killed Oy, but that's it. He did nothing else. And apparently it doesn't matter that Oy is dead because there will just be a copy of him somewhere in some other world. Death means nothing.

The only good thing about this book was the very end. The fact that Roland's quest is in an endless loop. Fucking cool. Execution could have been better but yeah, almost gave me chills.

The scene with the laughter vampire was also cool. I didn't even mind Stephen King's deus ex machina--it felt appropriate.

Overall, this series was okay. It had its ups (eg books 2 and 3), and it had its downs (book 1, ugh. And the "Wizard and Glass" one, which could have worked as a standalone but did not work as part of this series). The Wolves of the Calla was decent, as was Song of Susannah. And then this one was just...ugh.

OH and I'm annoyed that we never did find out exactly what happened with Cuthbert and Elaine. Or whatever their names are. We were forced to spend so much time with them in the flashback book, an Roland is constantly referencing them, I was hoping we'd get to see what happened to them. OH well.

Pluses - fast paced narrative, great action scenes, emotionally wrenching, bittersweet ending, perfect conclusion for the whole series
Minuses - cardboard cutout villains, cringe worthy "deus ex machina", inconsistent rules regarding time lines.
Overall - am so partial to this particular world, I don't care about the minuses. It somehow works and I enjoyed the book thoroughly.

It's been a long time since I've finished a book, and actually missed the characters. While some elements wrapped up a bit too conveniently (
SpoilerMordred, defeating Red King..
) I thought the ending was perfect. Bittersweet.

It's about the journey not the destination say thankya.

PS. this line killed me:
SpoilerThe body was far smaller than the heart it had held :( :( :(

I took my time to think about this book.

You cannot review the book without talking about the series. The book is a bit of a mess , but that ending… and the series it completes..

Book - 3/5
Series - 5/5

I’ve never read a more meta textual story. It is a story about stories and only after finishing it does it become clear why so many reread it. It is a masterpiece of creation and never have I seen a story that asks so much of it’s reader. That IMPLICATES the reader as being as responsible for a characters fate as the antagonist and the author. We readers are greedy and never satisfied. We always want more.

KA is a wheel and the page keeps turning.

I started this series in 2002. Twenty years. And although the payoff at the end was not quite what I expected I have no regrets. It’s a sprawling story, but a good one. A fair one. Worth the time. All 20 years of it.
