I’m not sure how to write a review for this book without giving away most of the plot, but I shall attempt.
This book is a ride, and I mean that in the best way possible. What the plot sometimes lacks in detail and worldbuilding logic, it makes up for in sheer heart and aesthetic.
It wasn’t what I explicated, from the descriptions I’d heard, but I think it’s actually better. I’ve often seen it described as a conversion therapy horror novel, but I’d describe it more as a loosing the fear of hell horror novel.
I love the main character, who was incredibly relatable to me as a fellow autistic lesbian recovering from fundamentalist religion, and the romance was so sweet and simultaneously an embodiment of rebellion and freedom. And Saul is the perfect sidekick. 10/10 chosen family. 10/10 cathartic vengeance on the homophobes.
I’d best describe this book as the love child of a Frank Peretti book and Good Omens.
Please be forewarned that there is a lot of bug related horror, and act accordingly

Heartfelt and illuminating such a harrowing reality for so many. The way Chuck handles his queer and neuro divergent characters is so respectful. What an awesome read. Love is Real. ❤️

I expected to like this one way more than I did but it was just fine 🤷🏻‍♀️ I feel like it had so many elements that could’ve been great and super impactful but I just didn’t enjoy the way they were executed. I spent the first half pretty confused and spent  the second half just ready for it to be over. I thought the party scene in the first half was the most intriguing scene and I wanted more of that but sadly that’s not what the rest was. Also one thing that really confused me was in the beginning when she’d be talking to her parents or thinking about them, she would switch between “mom” and “dad” to their real names and I figured that would come back into the story at some point but didn’t so I’m still very confused about it lol anyway, just didn’t love this one 🤷🏻‍♀️

I found the characters' extreme religious beliefs to be triggering for me. I grew up in the Christian church and I've been treated badly by people I called my church family. I tried to ignore it, but it started affected me.

I've been looking forward to this book since it was announced! I'm a big buckaroo for Tingle's tinglers, but also a die hard horror fan, so this was an obvious pick. I loved the first person narration from the perspective of an autistic person (as written by an autistic author!), the straightforward pragmatism brought the supernatural horrors into a very stark light, very much highlighted the gruesomeness. The plot was a fresh twist on an underutilized real life horror with a very interesting delivery. My only caveat that prevents this from getting a full five stars is that the fast pace felt TOO fast. Part of it was warranted by having such an efficient protagonist, but I felt like we weren't given enough time to sit with a plot development or emotional revelation before the next one arrived, and it kind of spoiled the gravity. I think if this book was twice as long, or even a quarter longer, the pacing would be much improved.

All in all solid 4 outta 5. Tingle does it again! I wish he'd write longer books, though!

Excellent! My first book by Chuck Tingle. I only know him by reputation, and I'm not sure what I expected exactly, but those expectations were definitely exceeded. The reason I'm rating it so low (not that 4 stars is low, really) is I wanted more background/flashbacks once we find out what's really happening to Rose. I wanted more of her history and memories. There's a reason those things are hidden from us, it makes sense for the plot to move forward, but I wanted more. This is just what I needed to reset my brain. <3
