Orlando

Wow, what a wild read!! This book cemented Virginia Woolf’s position as probably my favorite author. It is so wildly imaginative and really felt like an unreserved outpouring of what lies deep within her heart and mind. And I definitely did not expect the astute and lucid observations of gender in society, as well as the candidly feminist discussions of gender roles, hierarchy, and the society. I especially loved the distinctly queer and trans themes in this book - again unexpected but some of my favorite things about it. Woolf was so far ahead of her time!! Again, the language is a little plainer than her previous works I’ve read, but it is no less expressive and vividly springs to life. I definitely need to come back and read it a second time, and maybe then I will be able to understand a little more of its soul.

I liked Orlando a lot, but it was a slower read and not quite as engaging as the other Wolf novels I have read and loved (The Waves and Mrs. Dalloway). Still, I think there’s a great payoff in the last 50 pages in terms of the philosophical thought Wolf provides on time, aging, and gender. Well worth the read.

While mixed with some elements that don't age the best, I really enjoyed reading this for a Queer book club.

My favourite Virginia Woolf novel so far.

This was a reread about 15 years after my initial read. It was so interesting to see how differently I responded to this book at age 34 instead of age 18.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS WAS PUBLISHED IN 1928?!? got this second hand and it came alongside the previous owners annotations. which only added to the beauty of it all. bonus points for this book having the most beautiful film adaptation ever
