A deeply layered plot that mostly holds together, full of realistic-seeming elements of espionage, and an extra strong dosing of cynicism. The climax takes place in a Praesidium inquest and a nervous attempt to cross over the Wall, not in an explosion-ridden gun battle. On top of that, it's just interesting being placed back in this era in the Cold War.

I can understand now why this book propelled his notoriety in a way his first two didn't.

Stunningly written, though at times I wasn't sure what was actually going on. However, by the time I read the final sentence, I felt as though I had actually been a spy in Cold War Berlin, the paranoia, the gutwrenching fear and tension. The final pages had me gripped the book with white knuckles, and now that I'm finished, I want to cry for the characters, mere pawns in a game.

Fast and exciting with a lot happening in very few pages. This maintained a high intensity throughout the book.
Would like a more detailed conclusion to determine who really betrayed who, but maybe that is the point?
My first Le Carre and will definitely read more
