I typically find stories this length (novella) either a little too short or too long, but this one came off as the exact length it needed to be. Not rally a fan of the characters, but I did like the monsters and the violence and the quick pacing. I enjoyed it.

The premise of Howl is a story that you've seen and heard a hundred times. There's nothing new in being stranded and finding refuge in a lone cabin in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure you can think of at least five horror movies right off the top of your head that start out this way: middle of nowhere, no way to call for help, and a killer on the loose. You know the drill. Renee Miller hasn't reinvented the wheel, but what she has done is taken a common trope and tricked it out.

Somewhere between 3-4* for me -- The beginning took me a little bit to get into because I did not like any of the characters and wanted them to all die. They started out being too trope-like for me to want to get to know them, but I was definitely interested in finding out more about the monster right away. However, the latter half of the novella picks up a lot and hooked me in. Miller's writing really shows its strength in the horrific descriptions the further into the story you get. The conflict and issues that arise toward the end are fascinating and impossible to look away from. We get to see just enough of everything that is happening to form our own ambiguous ideas about what is really happening with these dreadful abominations of monsters and what the last character is going through. I loved the ending!
