Joe Abercrombie gets better with! every! book!
This is his 7th (well 8th) book in the First Law world. You do the math.
Some of the best characters ever.
The story is pure set-up and callbacks, but done superbly.
One gets the feeling that in the next book shit will hit the fan REAL bad.
All in all a solid 5/5.

Abercrombie is increasingly masterful. He rewards the reader every step of the way for having completed all of the previous books, not just by reusing his best characters but by weaving a meta-layer of situational irony based on the world's history. This top layer is never spoonfed or even called out explicitly but it's there as you watch the newer generation faced with the same problems, making different decisions than their parents and yet somehow meeting failures that rhyme perfectly with those of the past.
That is to say: technically the "age of madness" is a new trilogy in this world, but I would still strongly suggest starting at the beginning with the First Law books instead of here. Till get so much more out of the experience.
These books have evolved over time to hit the high notes of the human condition as well as the very lowest. It creates vivid contrast in the characters and I can't get enough even when it's making me feel less than awesome inside.
