It will be a cold day in hell when I rate an Abercrombie book anything less than 5 stars. This man just ticks all the boxes for what I want in a book and is hands down my favourite author.

A Little Hatred is set 28 year after the closing of The Last Argument of Kings and 15 years after Red Country. The Circle of the World has moved on and we are in the industrial age and the next generation is here to shape what it looks like. With some familiar and much loved faces making an appearance there is something here for Abercrombie fans old and new.

Filled with Abercrombie’s distinct wit, dry humour, grimness and plenty of c bombs A Little Hatred is textbook what we have come to expect from him. What ALH has done better than The Blade Itself (book 1 of The First Law) is get into the plot and characters at a much quicker pace. The arc that we see one POV in particular go though in this book alone is so well done and a joy to read. The book generally feels more fast paced than The First Law so if you are someone who found that a bit slower than you would like The Age of Madness could be for you.

Abercrombie has always been good at foreshadowing and sewing seeds for what is to come, and that goes double for ALH. THAT ENDING was crazy, I raced though the last 150ish pages and it was just bomb after bomb prepping us for The Trouble with Peace. I can not wait to carry on with this series as soon as possible.

Note: If you have not read The First Law or The Great Leveller you could absolutely dive into this series and still know what is going on, HOWEVER you will have many aspects so both of those spoiled for you, be warned.

5-

"A Little Hatred" by Joe Abercrombie is the best novel I've read in a good while!
I'm simply in awe of the author's talent (perfect pacing, characterisation, plot twists, writing style...).
And now I'm off to go and get my hands on the next book in the series!

This was my introduction to Abercrombie. The plot was really intriguing and I really liked all the characters. The sheer amount of POVs in the book can get overwhelming though and frankly annoying at times. The build up to the multiple climaxes though is great and watching the multiple storylines evolve as the characters react to them is fascinating to see.

Having never read Abercrombie before, I wasn't sure what I was getting aside from highly-rated fantasy.

It was an average story but one that was well-told. Aside from one character having visions and characters introduced as magi, there were almost none of the fantasy elements you'd normally expect.

I'm also left a little frustrated at the different character arcs and how they were told. The story of Broad seems to have been one of convenience for one of the main characters to use. Vick was used to show the other side of the Breakers story and show how bastardly the Inquisitors are, but there was nothing clever or interesting here. Stuff just... happened.

Maybe there are loads of cute little references and Easter eggs for fans, and maybe my complaints will fade away in the context of the next two books. Doesn't much matter, though, as I don't think I'll continue with this trilogy or go back and read The First Law trilogy. But I'm glad I tried.

Abercrombie returns with the beginning of a new trilogy. An epic tale filled with love, hatred, wars and rebellion. Joe Abercrombie is a master craftsman and an author that any fan of fantasy or historical fiction should be reading.
