wow. this was one hell of a read. I had to read it for my Sociology of Sexuality class [WMST 2233] with Dr. C. Lynn Carr at my university.

actual rating: 4 stars

+1: writing style; holy shit, this was great. Hane Blank could write grocery lists and I think I would pay her for them. it was the perfect balance of funny and serious, delivering all the facts in manners which were necessary. 10/10, I loved it.
+1: content; heteronormativity is overrated.
+1: breakdown; I really liked the breakdown of information in this book, it set good pacing (even if it was taking me 2 mins per page due to annotations)
+1: annotations; I really hope one of my friends is like "oh, what's that?" and then I can flip through this book to show them my annotations. Yeah, this was technically a textbook for me, but I lowkey annotated it like a leisure read.
-1: density; even though it is funny and relatable, it is pretty dense.

I was really disappointed in this book. I really really wanted to like it but I had to stop at page 103 out of the 166 pages that have actual content (the rest is bibliography.) The introduction had some interesting aspects about the author’s life and how it connects to the subject, but everything else felt like it was meandering and the bulk of the I formation was concepts I was already familiar with and would have preferred to hear about more in-depth, but sadly this book did not deliver. I guess I could recommend it for a reader who has little-to-no knowledge of gender studies but only if they’re comfortable with dry academic texts.
