Well-written with some really interesting ideas on the history of lynching, intergenerational trauma and Black history.

Also genuinely funny at times.

But I wish it went deeper into its themes.

A good read but it didn’t rock my world.

Also it’s very clearly a book written in 2020 - take that as you will.

Starts out as a confounding murder mystery and just gets weirder and weirder. Immersive in tone, style, dialect, and content. And you’ll have to brush up on your history of the United States if you’re wanting to fully understand it. An indictment of the country’s racist past related to lynching with a load of magical realism tossed in and still a great story on top of that.

To me this felt like 2 different books merged together - the first half proper gave me the heebie jeebies and is what made it a 4 star. The second half was still good but sometimes felt a bit repetitive and long winded - the introduction of so many law enforcement characters overwhelmed me a bit and then it turned out their names weren’t even relevant. The second half was more like a 3 star but overall it did keep me gripped and I was dying to finish it to find out what happened. A really interesting read - gets you thinking for sure!
