Cerita di buku yang satu ini berawal dari diundangnya Paman Poirot ke perjamuan makan malam Pak Shaitana. Pak Shaitana ini orangnya eksentrik dan gemar flexing. Ketika berjumpa dengan Paman Poirot dan mengetahui kalau profesi si Paman adalah seorang detektif swasta, Pak Shaitana langsung menawari Paman untuk berkunjung ke rumahnya karena ia ingin memamerkan koleksi para pembunuh berdarah dingin yang berhasil lolos dari kejahatan-kejahatan yang mereka lakukan. Tentu saja Paman Poirot tertarik sekalipun ia berpikir bahwa "koleksi" Pak Shaitana tersebut sangat berbahaya.
Poirot memenuhi undangan dan bertemu dengan tujuh orang lainnya. Acaranya berjalan lancar sampai mereka menemukan si tuan rumah, Pak Shaitana, sudah tidak bernyawa lagi karena ditikam. Semua orang yang hadir di perjamuan panik. Poirot dan ketiga kerabatnya yang lain pun memutuskan untuk menyelidiki kematian Pak Shaitana dengan mewawancarai empat orang lain yang menghadiri perjamuan tersebut.
Seperti biasa, Madam Christie membuat semua karakter di buku ini patut dicurigai dan memiliki motif kuat untuk membunuh Pak Shaitana. Plot twistsnya pun tidak main-main. Saya sempat beberapa kali terkecoh karena saya kira misterinya sudah terungkap, walaupun sebenarnya di lubuk hati terdalam saya bertanya-tanya, "misterinya sudah terungkap tapi kok sisa halamannya masih tebal?"
Yep, tentu saja saya terkecoh. Bukan hanya sekali dua kali, namun tiga kali berturut-turut. Saya juga tidak bisa menebak siapa pelakunya sejak awal karena setiap kandidat pelaku pembunuhan sangat-sangat patut dicurigai. Jadi, saya pasrah saja mengikuti alur cerita tanpa menebak-nebak siapa pembunuhnya.
Keterlibatan Paman Poirot dari awal sampai akhir buku ini menambah semangat saya untuk membaca. Dan benar saja, kehadiran Paman membuat ceritanya lebih seru dan juga menyenangkan. Terutama saat Paman Poirot merasa terhina karena ketika bertamu, bukannya dipersilahkan masuk ia malah diminta berdiri menunggu di atas keset yang sudah lecek.
Saya sangat-sangat merekomendasikan buku Madam Christie yang satu ini untuk kalian penggemar cerita detektif dengan banyak plot twist.
Dari empat buku Madam Christie yang sudah saya baca tahun ini, buku ini adalah favorit saya.

A man is murdered at a bridge party in front of 8 witness...4 of which are police/crime investigators. Catchy enough! I've been meaning to read this one for a long time. It was worth the wait.

I'm gonna be honest with you , this is the second novel by agatha Christie for me the first one i don't remember but that proves that i didnt liked it though I'm into crimes and whatever but then this book is amazing i had to say i cant wait to read more and more
I loved everything, the plot , the characters, everything , I enjoyed it ! Literally n! And I'm not overreacting honestly

I don't feel like this one was one of her best. Nice setup but clumsy execution. Solution satisfying but hard to swallow.
I enjoyed the set up of this one. The victim invites 4 people he believes have gotten away with murder and 4 of Christie's detectives (Poirot, Battle, Colonel Race & Mrs Oliver) to a cocktail party. Murder, of course, ensues.
I also enjoyed the meta quality of this storyline; Mrs Oliver(a stand in for Christie herself?) discussing popular mystery tropes and the structures of conventional mysteries.
Since the book was written about 90 years ago, there are racist grandma comments that occasionally arise - mainly calling one character a Dago repeatedly.
I am re-reading all of Christie's books and I started to feel a sense of deja vu while reading this. Have I seen a tv show based on this story? Is it similar to another one of her books? Am I somehow recalling this plot from my first reading of it over 40 years ago? Who knows! It just all felt very familiar. That is fine by me because I turn to Christie when I want a comfort read, something I am accustomed to.

This is one of my favorite Poirot books. Christie's plotting and spare prose are excellent and engaging. As others have noted about some of her books, there is a bit of racism and sexism, and though I wish those elements weren't present, this is still a great read.
