One of the more brilliant books I have read. In particular, the first chapter about Noah's ark, the chapter about the legal battle, and the interlude about love. Clever, cynical, and thought-provoking, albeit sometimes over my head. I did a mix of audio and paper, and enjoyed both.

Funny, poigniant and at times just damn baffling, History is an interesting take on events - some well known, others less so - that have shaped our world.
And it goes to show there is more to woodworm than meets the eye.

I found it boring. The central theme got old. The last section was novel however and kind of interesting

this wasn't so much a history of the world as it was a variation on a theme, the theme being the flood and noah's ark. every story seemed to relate to that parable, some more directly than others. besides the somewhat misleading title the book's biggest failing is that none of the subsequent chapters can match the genius of the first one, a retelling of the flood from the perspective of some minuscule stowaways. if nothing else at least read this satirical chapter. the other 9 and a half are good but won't change your life.
The first 3/4 of this book is like 5 stars. I love the interconnected narrative and the British humor. However once I got past the section that is written from Barnes perspective I just totally lost interest. It gets oddly sentimental and loses its footing. I wanted more of the beginning with the odd adventures and referential narrative. The vision for me totally got lost in the end.
