This was my third King novel, and gotta say it was a little daunting.
Took about 350 pages to really get into what the book was actually about. Felt like there was a lot of foreshadow in the beginning that could have been omitted.
All in all, just too long. The last 150 pages were quite good, but not enough to make this on my list of must reads unless you’re a diehard fan.

Como eu já falei no post que fiz sobre 2018 no meu blog, ele não foi um ano com muitas boas leituras. Talvez por causa do momento que eu estava passando na minha vida eu não estava conseguindo apreciar de verdade quase nenhum livro, salvo alguns poucos exemplos — mas nenhum nem me inspirou o suficiente para escrever sobre aqui no blog.
Eis que eu resolvi voltar a ler meu querido Stephen King depois de quase 6 meses sem ler nenhum de seus romances (o último havia sido Cujo, em junho), e em dezembro eu sentir que já estava na hora de voltar a ler o velho Steve, então consultei sua bibliografia organizada por ordem de lançamento e descobri que o próximo livro na lista seria Christine, lançado em 1983. Fiquei com um pouco de medo de começar esse livro, mas não porque tenho medo de carros assombrados, mas porque ele não é um dos livros mais bem avaliados do King (está com uma média de 3,75 no Goodreads) e eu já estava vindo em uma enorme ressaca literária. Eu não queria pegar raiva de um livro de meu vovô King.
Mas decidi arriscar e comecei a ler Christine no dia 10 de dezembro. Agora, quase um mês depois, finalizei a leitura e posso dizer, sem medo, que não me arrependo de tê-lo pegado.
Em Christine acompanhamos a história de como Arnie Cunningham decide comprar o carro que dá nome ao livro, indo contra conselhos de Dennis (seu melhor amigo) e seus pais, Regina e Michael. Christine é uma lata-velha quando Arnie a compra (sim, durante todo o livro o carro é referido como se fosse uma mulher, mas juro que faz sentido no contexto que o autor constrói), mas surpreendentemente Arnie consegue consertá-la em tempo recorde. No entanto, misteriosamente Arnie, que era um rapaz coberto por acnes (seu apelido criado por bullies era "cara-de-pizza") e que estava longe de ser atraente, começa a melhorar de aparência à medida que Christine também melhora.
De certa forma, eu diria que Christine podia até ser considerada uma história de amor — amor entre dois amigos, amor entre um garoto e seu primeiro carro, talvez até sobre o amor de um psicopata com sua psicopatia (isso faz algum sentido?), e tudo isso só é possível porque, como já é de conhecimento geral, o maior trunfo do King é conseguir construir personagens cativantes e verossímeis, mesmo quando a história se trata de objetos inanimados que se tornam assassinos. Nas mãos de algum autor meia-boca, Christine poderia ter facilmente se tornado em um livro slasher, uma versão escrita de algo que se assemelharia aos piores filmes da franquia Sexta-Feira 13, mas King consegue fazer com que nos afeiçoemos aos personagens e que até choremos quando alguns deles encontrem seus destinos sangrentos.
É inegável que a primeira metade do livro é ligeiramente um pouco mais demorada de se ler (demorei quase 20 dias para ler as primeiras 250 páginas, mas isso foi muito culpa minha, já que estava planejando TCC e correndo para finalizar demandas de fim de ano no trabalho), mas é uma demora que, com toda certeza, é recompensada com todos os acontecimentos da segunda metade da obra.
Eu não colocaria Christine em um Top 10 do King, mas também não o colocaria entre os piores livros do autor (os únicos que realmente não gostei até hoje foram Rage e The Running Man, e podemos dizer que nem são do King, já que são de seu pseudônimo Richard Bachman) e merece uma boa nota. No fim, concordo plenamente com a nota do Goodreads, 3,75!
PS: A narração do Holter Graham no audiobook está perfeita, recomendo fortemente pra quem curte audiobooks!

How ironic that Stephen's book about a hot hot car is the SLOWEST READ EVER!!!!!
This is a story about a haunted car that kills bad teenagers. It should be 300 pages MAXIMUM - and yet? This baby clocks in at just over 500. Stephen, WHAT?
Summary: When Dennis's friend Arnie first sees "Christine," a rusting, beat-up 1958 Plymouth Fury being sold by former owner Roland LeBay, that's the beginning of the end. Arnie is a smart and funny kid, but also a pimple-faced Loser, frequent target of all types of bullies. But after Christine, things start to change. While he's fixing up Christine, his own life appears to be transforming - for one thing, he's finally got a girlfriend, Leigh Cabot, who is THE PRETTIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD as the book likes to remind us all the goddamn time - do not worry, you will never forget that she has RAW HONEY COLORED HAIR and you will always be told what outfit she's currently wearing. But unfortunately Leigh, like pretty much everyone except Arnie, doesn't like Arnie's car. Something about Christine seems....... evil. Cue the rippin' rock and roll music.
There are things that I liked here, although I think ultimately the problem is that this book is too long so even the good parts start to wear thin. But Dennis and Arnie's friendship is really sweet, and their Thanksgiving dinner scene is probably the best part of the book. I also enjoy Dennis as a narrator - as far King heroes go, he's actually got a bit of a personality and he's fun to read. This is also the first King book I've read that stars teenagers (Carrie is sitting on my to-read shelf), and I liked the realizations we'd get from Dennis about growing up, seeing your parents in a different light, saying good bye to school.
This is also the first King book I've read where the monster-as-metaphor-for-addiction felt the strongest. The descriptions of Arnie as a different person, becoming isolated, his obsession with the car that everyone else is begging him to give up - it's tragic.
Stephen King Checkmarks for Christine: Overbearing controlling mother. Epigraphs on Epigraphs. Psychotic Knife-Wielding Bully. Casual racism. Engineer Boots. "The Swell of Her Breasts." Down and out loser succumbing to his darker self.
I saw John Carpenter's adaptation of the movie before reading the book (because I do love me some Carpenter and also the main theme from Christine is phenomenal, listen to that). I do think the best version of this story is as a movie; but even Carpenter's version doesn't seem to do it justice. I think this story needs a take a la Edgar Wright circa Baby Driver - you need a movie that never takes its foot off the accelerator, that's driven by the music and cut like a music video.
So we have two versions of Christine, the original book and the movie adaptation, and neither actually seem to do a good job. But, if you could only go with one, I'd just pick the movie. It's a better and shorter time. Or just watch Little Shop of Horrors! It's almost the same damn thing, but with a big plant instead of a car.

I'm sorry, there is just no way to make the evil-vehicle plot scary. No one has ever managed it. So I can't blame King too much.
Too unnecessary long.
Is a mystery classic, not scary at all.
I like the writing. And the plot is interesting, at the end I got unsolved question but it was as a nice read.

This was very good, creepy, but not horrifying. I am not a horror fan, but as an avid book lover, Stephen King was the one author I wasn't going to pass up. I like this book because it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, horror wise. So for those of you who aren't into horror, but want to try one of Stephen King's books, this is the one for you. It was very well done.
If this was half the length it could have easily gotten 3. Took way too long to get going and then I couldn’t wait for it to finish. Kinda spooky and king paints a great atmosphere but nah
There isn't much that I didn't like about this book, but perhaps the length. It seemed at times to be long, just for the sake of being long.

Ya tenía una idea de que me iba a encontrar en este libro ya que amo la película y King aborda mi pasión. Los autos.
Pero Christine no es un auto como cualquier otro, al maestro no le bastó con narrarnos la historia de un típico adolescente que sufre bullying, oh no. Aquí se encontrarán con un auto poseído que va cometiendo asesinatos contra quienes se interponen entre ella y su dueño.
Y la premisa en estas simples palabras suena bastante vaga e incluso uno lo ve y duda acerca de si darle una chance o no.
Admito que al principio se vuelve un poco pesado pero podría definirlo como un viaje en la montaña rusa, comienza despacio y uno piensa que no lo va a sorprender pero ya llega un momento en el que por fin te emocionas y quieres ver a Christine en acción, que por ende, eso te invita a seguir leyendo para finalmente dar con ella haciendo sus actos de venganza contra los "cagones" y oh Dios.
Una maravilla volver a leer a este Stephen tan sanguinario que no teme a la censura ni escatima descripciones grotescas.
