This book touched me in a way no book ever has. It tore trough my chest and stroked my heart with bloody fingernails. It made me feel warm inside in the most brutal way. Goran truly is a wonderful person with a wonderful voice emerging from a beautiful brain. At this point I think I could read his shopping list and praise about it for months. Therefore, I thank him with all my heart for this beautiful piece of fiction that is a lot more than just fiction and expands beyond our lives and comprehension of them. It is the kind of a book that never really leaves you, rather it changes you fundsmentally and you cannot unread it. You keep rediscovering it as you live your life, it never really stops being relevant and you always find something in it - comfort, a good laugh or just an escape ... For me The Fig Tree was kind of a 'take whatever you need' station. And it gave me a lot.

In this book we follow three generations of a family, at the same time as we follow the recent history of Yugoslavia up to present day. The characters were interesting, although not always loveable, and the history was were laid out with all the nuances of religion, ethnicity and nationality and the baggage that each of these carry in that part of the world. It also looks at the quite interesting, even if sometimes unusual circumstances of the relationships of these three generations.
