while not the best written book ever - i was surprised by the quality and depth of this book. i think you should start with the first in the series and then read this one before making any judgement calls.

I love these books. When I finished this one for the first time, I really wasn't sure about it. There was one that really bothered me. (I would mention it, but it's big spoiler.) Once I got past that, however, I couldn't get over how awesome this book is! I think it's genius. It's original, unique, gripping, and I love it!
I would definitely suggest this book/series to anyone!

“She cut off my hand, must be love” -Gen

Once again in awe of how boring this book was until about 65% of the way through. I liked Attolia turning on slimey Mead, and Gen being “betrayed” by the Gods…. But that’s about it. ALSO eddis started a whole ass WAR over Gen getting his hand cut off but is now all nice and cordial to Attolia???? AND GEN IS STILL TERRIFIED OF THE QUEEN????

I devoured this book. I couldn't wait to read it when I got home from work. I wish the third person would stay because I hate first person but I believe she goes back to first. I wouldn't say that the twists in this were unexpected I started to have a good idea of where it was headed a little into it. But it was still great and OMG must read the next one.

I was meh about the first book, but I really loved this sequel. The characters and intrigues came to life for me, and the ending surprised me pleasantly.

Good guys, bad guys, it's all relative and the characters are so motivated by politics they are almost not responsible for their bad behavior. This book makes strategy seem interesting!

Second reading in preparation for the new book. Either due to my increased age or Game of Thrones culture, politics and strategy are normalized and this book is still wonderful.
