Attolia is terrifying.
Eugenides' luck and Gods have finally abandoned him, he is finally captured by Attolia. A cruel but befitting punishment sees him returned to Eddis, minus his hand, the traditional punishment for thieves. It's an action that will spin off a war between Eddis, Attolia and Sounis. And also break our hearts for Gen.
There's not enough of the laughing, mischevious Gen in this or the previous novels to get a true sense of how much this impacts him, but oh so heartbreaking. The story between Gen and Attolia is still one of my favourites ever.

I have rarely experienced characters that crazy (in a very good way).
I loved the first half and the ending blew my mind, but the middle dragged a bit.
In the beginning, Gen survives a traumatic event. Seeing him depressed and picking himself up with the help of his family moved me. We discover more about his homeland, his court, and his life as Thief. I loved exploring his relationship with Eddis and his father too. These characters are more complicated than they seem.
On the other hand, we are properly introduced to the queen of Attolia. What an incredible, complex, intriguing female character. She's ruthless, envious, and cunning with reason. Her relationship with Gen is as unhinged as it is almost poetic. Very political and a lot of mind games, which I love!! I don't consider it a romance book, so don't expect romance because it is not. It's very psychological with lots of ambiguous feelings.
The writing is fantastic. You have to catch the symbolisms and the little crumbs left there and then for it to be satisfying. The amount of foreshadowing makes it so much more enjoyable. Keep in mind that this book is character-driven. There's subtext everywhere.
However, I disconnected when they talked about politics and warfare (not their fault, I wasn't paying attention because ~mental illness~) and some ploys felt too easy. Some scenes I didn't catch the usefulness of. But I didn't feel bored overall. I was hypnotized by them.
I can't wait to continue this series and see more of Gen's mischief and his dumbass heart.

I adore this book and this series. I’ve read it multiple times, and I’m sure I’ll read it again.
Original review: For once, the sequel was just as good, if not better than the first.
