~reread on an 8 hour flight~ ✈️

This reread has reminded me of why I love this series so much (as if I needed reminding 😂😆) There is, of course, the subtle foreshadowing for events that happen not only in this book, but even the sixth book (which is absolutely insane, considering it was written 20 years after this one!!!)

The rich mythology isn’t as prominent as in The Thief (I realised we only get one myth this time 😕) but there wasn’t too much time for storytelling anyway, with more politics and action instead 👑 We also get a more geographical sense of the world and how the three countries interact with each other, along with forces outside of the Little Peninsula; the one thing I think would’ve helped is a map!! 🗺 I know there’s one in the later books (you can search online for the official Queen’s Thief Map by Maxime Plasse) but that doesn’t have the names of the smaller islands involved in this book’s politics 🥲

Anyway, the symbolism coupled with the sneaky uses of certain words in the characters’ dialogue…👀 Megan Whalen Turner definitely rewards attentive readers so if you pay attention closely, you’ll be able to predict some of the “plot twists” and receive the satisfaction of being correct (unfortunately not me 😅)

How I wish I could experience reading this series for the first time again 😭

I really enjoyed this book. Fast and cunning.
The Characters are flawed, but smart and calculating.
BUT I am sorry, the 'Love' from Gen to Attolia, and the other around, is so unhealthy... And enrages me a bit.
After Attolia orders to cut Gens hand off, Gen still saying he loves her... And nah, nah, that is not good... Just... Nah...

The second book in Gen's life. Again, Whalen has surprised me with plot twists and intrigue that I did not see coming. These are very well written books with a great story line and even better characters.

EDIT: reread this again. not a year goes by that i don't reread this series. i'd just like to fangirl for a moment to say: i love attolia!! i love gen!! i love eddis!! i love everyone. i again caught hints that i'd missed during my 500 other rereads. the writing did not age as well, but this tale is still timeless.

I'm not sure I'm as charmed as this book wants me to be, but I have to say it's a particularly fan-attractive novel. It is beautifully plotted and written (although the pacing could slow down sometimes) and it invites so much shipping, and rooting for the characters.

I love Eddis, Attolia and (slightly less, but a lot) Eugenides. I was riveted and dazzled. The interactions, the hurt/comfort, the world: they all fit together beautifully.

I can absolutely see why everyone says the second volume steps it up.

Slower moving than the Thief, but just as captivating. Turner has perfected the unreliable narrator with Eugenides!

“If I am the pawn of the gods, it is because they know me so well, not because they make my mind up for me.”

“He could tell her he loved her. He ached to shout it out loud for the gods and everyone to hear. Little good it would do. Better to trust in the moon's promises than in the word of the Thief of Eddis. He was famous in three countries for his lies.”

Sip.

“He lies to himself. If Eugenides talked in his sleep, he'd lie then, too.”

There's so much potential here for good storytelling and adventure, only to have a romance come out of nowhere and force its way front and center. I still love the characters, but I think I'll be approaching the next book with caution.
