This mixture of a murdery mystery, Gothic Fiction and a love story intrigued me a lot about this book. As it is a YA, it was however, a bit out of my comfort zone.

Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed this story and Dana Schwartz is indeen a very talented writer.

Some parts of the book felt a bit rushed and also, Spoiler Alert, the ending felt a bit odd with a turning point towards the supernatural. That is, why I gave it 3.5/5 stars.

Despite my critique, I am so much invested in the story of Hazel and Jack, that I will be reading the sequel as well.

It was one of those books where you can’t tell if the predictability of a plot twist makes it poorly or well written (a question I’ve grappled with many times). The writing style was also a bit difficult to get into, but it was distinctive and, more importantly, impactful. The title was a bit misleading—I was hoping for more romance, but honestly, that probably would have ruined the whole book. There are a lot of reasons for me to not like the book, but none of them accomplished that. I thought it was great, and captivating, and well-written, and creative. Overall, it was a quick and satisfying read.
This book made me feel wary of doctors. Like, okay, new phobia unlocked. It also left a lot of questions unanswered, so I’m anxious to see how the sequel addresses them, but I am also content with the ending.
This reminded me of the Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee, the Lockwood & Co. series by Jonathan Stroud, episode 3x15 of Supernatural, and the Good Omens minisode the Resurrectionists

Interesting storyline and concept for a book! I always enjoy historical fiction, but this one had just a touch of magical realism which was fun. Quick, enjoyable read.
