rip dante, you would have loved self insert fanfic and crossovers
tw for cursed review by me
Wow I love (looks at smudged writing on hand) contrarian pasta
Dante's Inferno is a ridiculous smorgasboard of worldbuilding concepts which serve as an inviting facade for those who don't realize what it actually is, which is Dante talking a lot about Greco-Roman figures he's interested in and like, Italian politics. Thank goodness this copy comes with a bunch of references in the back because I think the target audience for this otherwise is Italian History Majors and Probably No One Else. Which is mean. And of course there is an audience for this because most imagery of hell owes its roots to Dante somewhere, but also, man, there is some wild appropriation of mythology in here that I'm going to assume Dante made up,,, homie was like, I want some more paganism in my hell thank you very much. Shoutout to Lucifer crying tear blood and the dude turning into a dragon, specifically for the description of his "member" turning into "little dragon hands" (definitely real text from the Inferno, trust me), that was, that was a great time, loved reading that. Thank you Dante for the kinkiest depiction of hell in existence. I guess.

There can’t be absolution,
nor penitence when willing ill goes on.
That is, by contradiction, impossible.
“Father, for us the pain would be far less
if you would chose to eat us. You, having dressed us
in this wretched flesh, ought now to strip it off.”
So I kept still, to not increase their miseries.
And that day and the day beyond, we all were mute.
Fascinating.
Read as part of the recommended katabasis pre-reading, and I'm so glad I did.
I bought Kirkpatrick's translation before I even realised there are a million different editions and translations of this book, rip.
I hope hell is real and it's even worse than Dante's Inferno.
