I think this book is where the multiple timeline style of storytelling really starts to work perfectly. In the previous two books, I felt slightly annoyed at the jumping around, like I was being dragged away from an interesting story to read something else. But from here on, everything felt much smoother, with each new thread pulling me in instantly.

No original review, so this review is written after my June 2023 re-read.

This book was tough. Terrible things happen to our characters, and it's hard to watch them go through it. Hard and heartbreaking.

I also take some issue with how the other characters handle the disgusting rapist character in this book. Maybe it's partially a product of the 80s/90s, when this was written, but it's disgusting that this man
Spoilermind-controlled Jill to spirit her away and then spent weeks raping her while mind-fucking her so she thinks she loves him. I mean, I am seriously crying about it again just writing this. But knowing that, the "heroic" male characters - while angry - also pity him. Fuck them all. This makes me loathe them. It ruins Nevyn - it makes him seem just as fucking self-absorbed and uncaring of Brangwen/Jill as he was in his spoiled princeling life, when she was just an object to him and he wasn't sure if he wanted to "keep" her as he contemplated his life. She's just an object to him still, if he doesn't see that this horrible rapist scum should die horribly. He can shove his sanctimonious shit straight up his ass. Salamander, too, for not killing him when he rescued Jill. Fucking pigs, all of them.

I love the series, but that was all just tough to get through. And I need to take a little break here before continuing on.

I am enjoying this series so much! This was another fantastic book. I love how the various stories are woven together, and the main story just gets better and better.

3.5 stars, but rounding up
The main story trudges forth slowly in this third installment of Katharine Kerr's Deverry series. Fortunately, the flashback stories (with the previously incarnated characters) are delightful and provide lots of insight into the magical world the author has created.
The is a portion of the main story which bothered me quite a bit-one of the main characters is raped. While rape is repugnant and awful, it wasn't the assault that bothered me as much as the "That's terrible but oh well" attitude the fictitious male characters seem to harbor. I realize this book is decades old, and is actually quite forward thinking considering the prevalent attitude concerning rape at the time it was written, but it still niggles me in my heart of hearts.
Overall, this book is nicely done and I adore the series as a whole. Looking forward to the fourth installment.

More rape? I'm done. Done with stories across time. Done with mechanics that pop up randomly and arbitrarily (wild folk). Done with gushing descriptions of astral projection.

Just not my cup o' tea.

I wonder if the reason I didn't find this book as awful as other reviewers is because Robin Hobb's Tradeship trilogy broke me as a reader, so that I wasn't too surprised when things got super dark and weren't treated with the care that you would expect in a more modern book. Still I found this book to be super gripping and very difficult to put down, had me very anxious for Rhodry and Jill. With all the time jumps in the books, it's hard to keep track of when things are happening but I found surprising the lack of focus on Nevyn's whole "make things right" quest.

I think this would have been a good book if I had read the first two. As it is though, I felt like I was jumping in the middle of the story (which I was) and I was completely lost. To make things even more confusing, halfway through the story jumps ahead 400 years (I don't remember how many for sure) and tells a different person's story. I actually liked the second story better once I finally realized what had happened(that took a few chapters).

This book contains lots of sex and crude language. Beware!

And the story simply continues.

There are more challenges and moments to be lived in these various story threads that are so intricately interwoven.

It's just such a good series. And even though owning the paperback edition, I listened to this as well as audiobook and enjoyed the narration very much.
