This book has no substance. It is a flimsy inventory of men (father and 4 husbands) and mansions. Many important topics are neglected.

The life of Marjorie Post coincided with the feminist revolution from suffrage through liberation. Post was denied a seat on her own corporate board because she was a woman. But there is no discussion of whether Post related to or supported the feminists of her time. Did she understand that she was a "woman in business" role model? Was she in favor of women getting the vote? Nothing is mentioned.

What were the deeper causes for the dissolution of four marriages? (You can write off number 1 to youth and number 4
to sexual orientation.) Was she a demanding partner? Did she have an imperious personality that diminished her spouse? Lots of money was at stake. Were any of the men gold diggers? Did they sign prenuptial agreements? She rebounded awfully quickly. That kind of money is a potent aphrodisiac.

What about the Russian art acquisitions? Even though lawfully purchased, future governments might demand the return of their national treasures. How did she pull it off? The book characterizes her as a collector with keen judgment, but the ambassador husband complained about her greediness.

This book delivered a broad brush chronology of her marital life. Why was Post compelled to hook up with a man all the time? Pataki offers only the trivial explanation that Marjorie was in love with being in love.

There probably is enough content for a multi volume biography.

My 2 star rating stands.

This was so cool! What an awesome entrepreneur she was! I loved the descriptions of the decorations of her homes and the lavish parties, and I also love that she did a lot of good with her wealth too.

This was a great story. I had no idea who Marjorie Post was before I started reading this book. I really enjoyed hearing about her history and how she became who she was. A smart businesswoman who really had no rights to be a businesswoman back in her time. Marjorie was a woman before her time. Such a great read and a history lesson at the same time.

puzzyfussy's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH

I tried so many times to get into this book but just couldn't. It was boring from the start and after the 5th time I just gave up. You can't win them all.
