I read this book because I wanted to try something new from what I usually read, and Mrs Jones the librarian recommended me this. I found myself spellbound by this amazing book at the very first page. This miraculous book tells the tale of 23-year-old Mary Yellan, whom by her mother's dying wish went unto a journey to Jamaica Inn to find her aunt Patience. Upon arrival, she was startled to find her once pretty and sunny aunt a changed woman. Affected by the Inn's brooding power, she found herself plunged into the dark business of her mysterious uncle Joss. However, she soon discovered her feeling for sweet Jem, Joss' brother. She dared not trust him at the beginning but slowly revealed a soft spot for him. Every twist and turn in the story made me wanted to screech aloud and applause. Each time it reached a point with a wall blocking, something smart would happen to rescue Mary from her crisis. The language was descriptive and effective, and the characters were clever, which could only be because the author's got outstanding cleverness and talent. The writing was just right for as it was not too easy and not too hard but I could still learn a lot from it. It was exactly what I had been looking for. Jamaica Inn quickly ascended to a top space in my heart. I will recommend this book to everyone and spread it even far out than it already is.

Incredible atmosphere and I found Mary’s character really likeable. Her relationship with gender would be a very interesting essay topic.

One main drawback is that there are quite a lot of outdated tropes regarding appearance and characteristics
particularly around the vicars albinism but also in Joss’s face
.

Not my favourite book but highly suspenseful and even quite scary at times. I love some moody works set on the moors what can I say!
