reflective medium-paced

Raymond Carver is a barebones writer. There isn't an unnecessary word in his fiction. This keeps the plot moving, often through dialogue, and requires a keen attention to tone and atmosphere. Fortunately for readers, Carver excels at capturing how people talk to one another. Just beneath the sparse printed words exist complex emotional characters, embroiled in inner and outer turmoil, and brought to life in a few pages of what appears to be seamless writing. He has perfected the art of dialogue and short story writing. His male leads are heavily flawed, emotionally insecure, mentally unstable, and compulsively helpless. The writing is sharp, the humor is dry, and the stories believable. Do yourself the service of reading Carver's collection of short stories. You won't be let down.

Quiet simmering violence! The little lives of people!

This is a tremendous collection. Carver takes the mundane realities of people, relationships, and choices and twists a screw, sometimes directly and other times sideswiping on an angle. His voice is clear and authentic. These people seem like real people: troubled, fallible, irrational, and emotional people.

Another impulse buy as I've never actually seen this before (though knew about it). I've been gradually working my way through Carver's poems but this is the first prose I've read.

His language and dialogue is so sparse yet immensely real. It's impressive. These short tales are almost uniformly bleak, hard and altogether human. Violence, aggression, sorry, doubt and distrust sit together with love. They are not always nice to read (hence my 3 stars rather than higher, as I appreciate them, though not always like them) but they are exceptionally good.

My edition isn't on here currently, with a sparse white cover and the title in grey and orange.
