Enjoyed the first half well enough. And then it just... kept... going. This is not one book. This is like... five books.

And it goes without saying that from a modern perspective there's a whole lot of *problematic* stuff in this book. The ending and the symbolism it implied made me want to throw the book across the room a little bit. (I constructed a much better alternate ending in my head if anyone is curious.)

When all is said and done I'm glad I read it, I wouldn't read it again, and I'm not at all sure than it needs to live on forever in the corpus of classic novels.

I know this is fundamentally wrong to say, but this is a case where I actually like the movie better than the book. But, still worth the read if you like American Lit

Halfway point and I...just...can't...bring...myself...to...finish.

How is a book about battles, chases, escapes, kidnappings, murder, an ever-present threat of rape SO F*CKING BORING???

And did I mention sexist? And racist? And self-righteously, aggressively pious?

And THIS is The First Great American Novel? Mark Twain and I disagree.

It was good.

Nothing too amazing but all-in-all a good story.

I am known as a historical fiction denigrator, and this book will hear no different from me.

It will be unlikely that I will read the other books in the The Leatherstocking Tales series.

This novel would have been better if it were not so incredibly wordy. This story is ruined by using excessively creative word use in description and narrative. There is something to be said for being plain spoken, and Cooper's work could benefit from it. I don't know if he was being paid by the word, but my guess would be that he was.
