This was a quick, fun read where “little red riding hood” is actually following her dream of being a Huntsman. Kit was a cinnamon roll, while Peter was the most insufferable, infuriating character.

I liked the way this world talked about the “prophecies”, but I think I’ll have to read more in the series to get a better understanding.

I’ve been really loving Laura Greenwood’s Grimm Academy series, and this book was no exception! I absolutely devoured this Little Red Riding Hood retelling.

Red has always wanted to join the Huntsmen, and I love that she got her wish. She’s strong, smart, and perfectly capable of defending herself when necessary.

I also thought Red’s friendship and eventual romance with her fellow Hunstman, Kit, added some really nice layers to this story. I loved that he always had faith in her, because he knew she could hold her own.

To sum this up, I thought this book was an incredible read. Laura Greenwood has completely captured my interest with the Grimm Academy series, and I’m very happy to have discovered her as an author!

Aredenne, Red to her friends, is sent to Grimm’s Academy on scholarship to avoid her prophecy. Unlike the other ladies at the school, she has no interest in the classes or the balls. Her dream is to join the mysterious Huntsman. Thanks to the skills her father taught her in childhood, she passes the test for entry. The only dark spot is Peter, her former beau, who betrayed her, and seems determined to cause trouble. With the acceptance of the other Huntsman as well as her partner, Kit, she excels at her training and defeats the forces against her.

Returning to Laura Greenwood’s Fairy Tale world with an unconventional heroine for this retelling of Little Red Ridinghood. Red is strong and determined and works hard to meet her goals. She confronts her prophecy head on, fighting to save herself, Kit, and Grandma. Her relationship with Kit evolves naturally and is a match of equals with mutual respect. Altogether a satisfying and enjoyable take on an old tale.

A fun and adventurous retelling of Red. There may not be wolves in this version but there is definitely an adventure as Red joins the Grimm Academy to become a huntsmen. The story even has the visit to grandma’s house. This Red is independent and wants nothing to do with going to balls and wearing dresses. She’s into protecting others and is quite good with a bow. The romance is sweet and loving. Definitely want to read more from the series.

This book looks at the adventures of Red as she tries to become part of the huntsmen. The author has done a great job with the series and each book is quite different.

Red is determined to become a huntsman, despite the group being notoriously only for men. Kit is already a huntsman and sees something in Red. I adored Red’s strength of character, even when facing a bully. Great little twist near the end. Quick, easy read.

This is book three of the Grimm Academy series and retells the story of Little Red Riding Hood, but with a twist. Aredenne (Red) is a scholarship student at the Grimm Academy and comes from a poor background. She is there because she has a prophecy and doesn’t know when or if it will come true, or if she will be able to avoid it altogether. Her only wish has been to become a Huntsman, something no other female has done. The Huntsmen are based just outside the castle where the Grimm Academy lies and she goes there to approach the Head Huntsman and to ask to be allowed the chance to train amongst them to become a Huntsman herself.

She is met at the edge of the camp by a tall stranger, in the red cape of the Huntsmen, and lead to their headman. He asks her name, but doesn’t give his own. She is told to come back the next day for testing, but has no idea what that may involve. The only downside is an ex-suitor called Peter, from her home village, who is still as obnoxious now as he was then. He knew that it had always been her dream to be a Huntsman, never his. So why he has turned up here, is unclear! He apparently, isn’t very good at any of his training either! Red was brought up with a tolerant father who helped train her in activities more often down by boys, but it has all helped her reach her ultimate goal.

The path towards hr prophecy will involve a visit to her grandmother’s small hut in the woods and she is lucky to have the first Huntsman she met, Kit, along as her trainer and friend. What happens is for you to find out. Grimm Academy is the place many go to escape their prophecies, but it doesn’t always work and being as poor as she is, the details of her own prophecy are very sketchy and not as detailed as many others. Matters have been adjusted in this retelling and makes for an enjoyable read. Short but complete. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I really enjoyed this Retelling Of Red Riding Hood and thought it was a good addition to this series of standalone fairy tale retellings. This book has some great characters and I liked the reference that Red makes about Goldilocks inspiring her to become a Huntsman. I look forward to reading more from this series.

Series Character and Story Connections

Huntsman Theo and the Princess he is betrothed to are in Lilies Of Loss: A Fairy Tale Retelling Of The Frog Prince (Book 04)

Zerrin (Red's Roommate) is in Glints Of Gold: A Fairy Tale Retelling Of Rumpelstiltskin (Book 06)

There are those days, when I don't feel too well, when I'm a little sick, and yet I still wanna get some reading done. Those are the perfect days to read a Laura Greenwood book. So, when I finished my first book of the day and started to feel a little hot after lunch I thought this was the perfect moment to finally read the next installment in the Grimm Academy Series, a light hearted, easy to read fairytale retelling series.

Huntsmen and hoods, a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, is exactly what I had hoped and expected it to be. The book follows the same concept as the other books in the series. A girl is attending Grimm Academy because there is a prophecy about her, a prophecy, when coming true, that can end with her dying. This time however we're not talking about a princess following dancing classes and etiquette lessons, but we're talking about a fierce girl who wants nothing more than to be part of the Huntsmen, something usually only meant for men.

And this little red riding hood is exactly the kind of girl to pull that off. She can take care of herself and others, she has the skills to actively fight and survive and to make a difference. And even though there are a few guys making fun of her, she's mostly supported. Especially because she shows she really can keep up with all the others. I like how it's made a theme that this is not the "proper girl thing", without it being in your face. Red doesn't constantly have to fight for her place. The moment people meet her, they are okay with her choices and therefore she paves the way for others.

This also means that her relationship, because of course there is a romantic subplot in this story, feels different than the ones in previous books. Not only are these characters a proper match verbally and personality wise, they also are matched physically. It's in a lot of ways a really equal relationship where none of them is much stronger than the other and I liked that. I also liked how truly supportive Kit is. It made him easy to like and it made it easy to understand why Red fell for him so quickly.

I can't wait for the next book in the series already!
