Lore

Due to a punishment from Zeus, nine Greek gods are now mortal for one week every seven years to be hunted by descendants of seven Greek heroes. If a mortal kills a god, they get to take their powers. Lore Perseous fled the hunt 7 years ago when her family was brutally murdered, but when a wounded Athena shows up on her doorstep, Lore is pulled back in. She gets help from her old friend Castor, a healer who now has Apollo’s powers, and Athena swears to help her get revenge for her slain family. But they are threatened by the other mortals in the hunt who want the god powers for themselves. Will Lore and her friends survive the hunt? Will Lore be able to get her revenge? Or will they be able to stop the hunt permanently?

This is a YA book that is billed as a mix of “Hunger Games” and Greek mythology, and that’s a pretty accurate description of what they seem to be aiming for. And while the smattering of Greek myth characters and objects is interesting, the book overall suffers from overdone YA tropes, internal inconsistencies, and unnecessarily excessive violence. Oddly enough, even with all the fighting it also ended up being boring because there were too many people who miraculously didn’t die from mortal wounds, so there were no longer any stakes by the end. The characters are all pretty flat, and there are no character arcs. And in order to make the protagonist a “strong character” she not only has the survive the slaughter of her family, but then sexual assault. It’s excessive and unnecessary, and there are better ways to give a protagonist adversity without giving her severe PTSD. Oh, and it just kind of ends without fully explaining things.

I did not enjoy and would not recommend, though I am sure there are those that will enjoy its excessive violence and it’s YA tropes.

Thank you to Disney Books for sending me this beautiful ARC!

This is probably my favorite Young Adult book of the year. I have been in an adult-fantasy mood all year, so it has been hard to read some YA books and have it keep my attention. This book grabbed my attention, made unbreaking eye contact until... well, I'll let you know because I still cannot stop thinking about this book.

What you need to know :
A few gods really upset Zeus. So he did a thing.
First, he took the nine gods and every seven years they are mortal for seven days.
Second, if the descendants of ancient hero bloodlines kill a god during those seven days, they seize their divine power and become a god themselves.
Third, each bloodline, or family, wants a god in their bloodline in order to have them bless their family with riches. Example, their god could agree to spread a plague that only their bloodline has the cure for. Which means they would end up being super rich from all of that.

With all that, the families work together to an extent.... and also kill each other for the glory of their family. So it comes to no one's shock that Lore is the last in her bloodline due to a brutal massacre of her family. She has been hiding for years, wanting to live and not let the other families know she was left. But when a god finds her and gives her a chance at revenge... she can either walk away or take it to avenge what happened to her family.

GUYS THIS BOOK.

The romance, the friendships, the twists after twists, the lore (the actual noun, not the main character) of the book and and and and.... I just loved everything about it. I honestly do not have one single bad thing to say about this book except that it ended and I am sad about it. . Everyone needs to add this to their 2021 TBRs!

i put this book down around 60% a couple years ago. finally picked it back up and i finally finished it. i really wanted to like it but there was just too much going on. and what was that ending?

I so wish I liked this book. I wanted to like it. I absolutely loved the cover and I’m glad to have the hardcover with that beautiful cover art.
But……the story had no punch. The ending came out of nowhere. All the twists were predictable and just anti-climactic. The romance had little base and lest we forget the main characters were 10 when they last met and now are 17. So give me some basis on why they like each other now. Another point, can someone tell me how the aegis works?? She can talk to it but there’s exposition about everything but this. Give me more please!

I want to like this book so bad!! Ok, rant over!

I did like some parts. Miles and Van are adorable. Van’s character development and growth is great. I liked Athena as a character up until the middle of the book. This is the goddess of wisdom, can we get more depth from her decisions than a cookie cutter villain? Ok ok… I did like her character though.

PS: what does Medusa have anything to do with the story? She was mentioned once in the entire book and there’s no justification to put it on the cover!

Cute idea but falls a little flat for me. There are pacing issues. When it’s slow it DRAGS. But when it’s moving, it’s really good.

I’m glad I listened to this, the narrator did an amazing job. I loved every second even though the characters were a lot and sometimes confusing. I had a copy of the book too which has a very helpful cast of characters cheat sheet. I love what another reader said Greek mythology meets hunger games, so true. I feel like i can come back to this one again to get even more out of it!

Excellent premise - disappointing execution.

Lore is yet another underdog/chosen one/lethal competition story that started out so brilliantly, but then devolved into an exhausting rollercoaster of bloody action and characters that I didn't really care about.

Because they rebelled, the gods of Olympus are sentenced to spend seven days, every seven years, being hunted by descendants of Greek heroes. If they are killed, then their power and immortality goes to the killer. I mean, this sounds amazing, right?

Then come the info dumps, the she's dead (but she isn't) moments, the betrayals that anyone with the least amount of knowledge of Greek mythology would see coming, and the cringe-y romance between two people who haven't seen each other in years but sure, ”I was born knowing how to do three things—how to breathe, how to dream, and how to love you”.

I wanted to love this book, but despite nearly 500 pages and despite my love for all things Greek myth retelling, it was just ok for me.
