I did end up liking the world of the Agon, though I fear that after reading this I need to take a long pause on the murder game genre. It’s becoming quite overplayed, and LORE missed what the best of the genre master — The emotional attachment to participants of the game, and the heart wrenching sorrow the reader feels when a developed character is ripped from the game in tragic circumstance.
I never really find myself attached to a story’s protagonist, but find that my love of a story comes from its supporting characters. LORE gave me maybe one that I felt a little bit attached to.

What I DID enjoy was the appearance of a parable hidden deep in the text, and enjoyed that I really had to think about it in order to see it. I appreciated the very subtle ways that Lore’s story connected to a certain tale of old. If the mortal supporting characters had similar parallels to classic characters, I think this story would’ve been pushed over the top.

I just discovered that Greek mythology is not my thing but it’s fine. It is something you discover along the way of your reading journey

Holy shit dude this is a perfect book

Was a bit worried when I started this one as it was very slow and jumbled as fantasy books tend to be. As it was for younger readers as well I thought I would have to struggle through chapters and chapters of world building exposition. Luckily enough after the first few chapters the story really got going.

The purge with Greek mythological characters set in modern New York is such a niche but one I really enjoyed. Brutal in parts I felt the panic countdown as the characters have days to achieve their goals.

Lore is likeable as a character and you really feel connected with her as she tries to outrun the mistakes in her past that led to her families deaths. Castor is a puppy dog who is also insanely hot and powerful and I really shipped their romance.

Miles and Van are great side characters but could have done with a bit more development. Van in particular as his backstory is randomly mentioned in one pivotal scene so you don’t really focus on it.

The gods were cold and calculating and I really liked the war between newer and older generations of gods.

The descriptions of battles were at times confusing and I feel we didn’t really get a resolution to the Hermes storyline but the final chapter was heartwarming and very satisfying as an ending.

4/5 for YA novels 3/5 overall. Fun for anyone who had a Greek mythology phase as a kid

this book had been on my tbr forever and i am soo sad it took me this long to get to!! the plot was incredible, i couldnt out it down and had the best time. this book truly grasps your attention so that you cant stop reading. the writing only enhances that feeling and the characters are some you care about so deeply everything feels like a personal attack. overall while this book does have mixed reviews i loved it and cannot recommend it enough!!

3.5

I started off by really enjoying this book but it fell a little flat for me.
Things I liked:
Magical powers that were true to the original Greek Gods.
An interesting plot that made all of New York seem like a Hunger Games stadium.
The writing style and narrator were fun.
Things that fell flat for me:
The mixing of Greek mythology and a modern day New York clashed a little too much for me to get fully immersed. After an epic battle with a Goddess Lore’s friend tracks her on a cellphone….
Lore’s trauma was well written but I didn’t feel the love between her and Castor.
There were times when the writer mentioned how specific characters were feeling even though the story wasn’t their POV and that threw me off.
.
Overall this was a fun read and one that I would recommend but I wouldn’t rate it as a favorite.
There are graphic violent scenes so check TWs.
