This was a really cool book! Forgers are artists, dude.

I thought that this was a great introduction to the history of forgery, but certainly meant as an overview, and I intend to follow up on many resources and cases mentioned. The book itself reads much like an art history publication, stating intended arguments or topics to be discussed in order to draw attention to particular points, and overall I felt that most of the chapters covered those points. The chapter on power was the odd miss for me, as I found it didn't make the point as succinctly as other chapters, and that information seemed thrown together but nothing really followed through. The book is also significantly shorter than stated, starting on page 11, and having 2 blank pages at every section, with a half page intro to the chapter, so it reads relatively fast. Overall, I thought that Charney did a fine job at highlighting the complexities of forgery, from forgers to professionals to society's perception as well, and shows that the issue is not as black and white as one would assume.

Interesting read. Very informative with lots of great pictures. Easily accessible even for people like me who know little about art.

A quick, interesting read. Not sure what I expected. Not a "wow" book for me but not one I regret either.

I enjoy Charney's writings (minus his novel which I did not like very much). He is extremely knowledgeable and his writing is very accessible. His work is always well-notated and his bibliographies always provide me with other things to read.

This particular book is a nice, light look at forgeries and forgers over time. It explores the motives behind forgeries and verges off from art a bit looking at forgeries in other fields as well. Most of the subjects he touches on I have been familiar with. Anyone with an interest in art crime probably has come across most of the names cited in the book. It doesn't make the book any less enjoyable, though, as it was nice to recall some of the names I had read about previously. For those without a lot of knowledge, this is a good primer to the field.

Being published by Phaedon it is a gorgeous, high-quality book. The book is loaded with nice photographs which is an extra bonus.

Of all the topics in the book, I would love if Charney were to write more about the 21st century technologies that are both being used to identify forgeries and also to create better forgeries.
